(b Nauders, Tyrol, 28 April 1815; d Vienna, 19 March 1894).
Austrian painter. Starting life in a peasant family, he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice between 1832 and 1837, under Ludovico Lipparini (18001856). He won a five-year grant to go to Rome for his painting Moses on Mount Sinai, travelling there via Florence, where he studied the works of Raphael and early Renaissance religious painting. In Rome he encountered the circle around Friedrich Overbeck, and he began to produce paintings in a pious spirit such as Jacobs Journey through the Desert (1841; Vienna, Belvedere).
