American painter. He was educated at the Academy of Philadelphia
(1751–8), from which he withdrew to study briefly with John
Wollaston. Benbridge’s first portraits, of his mother, stepbrother,
half-sister and a large family group (all priv. cols), show
Wollaston’s influence in composition and colour. Benbridge’s
paintings of Achilles among the Daughters of Lycomedes and the Three
Graces (DE, priv. cols) are based on European prints after Rubens.
