Amadeo de Souza Cardoso

Amadeo de Souza Cardoso

(b Manhufe, 14 Nov 1887; d Espinho, 6 July 1918). Portuguese painter and draughtsman. In Paris from 1906, he frequented the académies libres. After producing caricature drawings, he began painting small landscapes. In 191112 his style approached that of Modigliani, whom he knew and with whom he exhibited in 1911. He was also impressed by the luxuriant orientalism of the Ballets Russes. His drawings at the time were linear and decorative, with medieval and heraldic references.
